Summarizing is used to condense information. It is commonly used to share experiences or read plot synopses. To create a summary, follow these steps:

  • Determine the writer's intention.
  • Select the main ideas of each paragraph.
  • Combine the main ideas.
  • Remove ALL examples and statistical data.
  • Use concise language and paraphrasing.
  • Eliminate repetition.

Paraphrasing is a crucial technique in summary writing, which involves expressing others' ideas in your own words. It helps in better understanding the original piece and crafting concise summaries. Ways to shorten expressions include using synonyms, changing sentence structures, turning complex sentences into simple ones, and combining sentences. Remember to read and understand the passage, eliminate unnecessary words and repetitions, and use transitions for a logical flow of ideas.
